Not sure I’ve heard of Maierhof before, but he’s a nice foil for Dörner here.

Taku Unami, solo — Amplify 2011, Stones
Photo by Yuko Zama: Taku Unami, performing at the Stone, Amplify 2011, Stones.
It’s been an interesting past couple years in EAI. If you follow the I Hate Music message board, innumerable discussions have taken place about the future of this area of music. The continued antics of Mattin, and Diego Chamy, have certainly been sketchy, often misplaced pointers toward some fundamental...

Suggestions for Improvisors
Improvisation and composition have obviously had a close relationship for a long time. Few would argue at this point, that there isn’t (at least in this area of music) much shared ground between them. The improvisor composes in real time, and the players of a composition often improvise in the interpretation of their parts. There is much to love in the tension between improvisation and...

Ryu Hankil's solo improvisation at Echoraum
Ryu Hankil’s solo improvisation at Echoraum from Balloon & Needle on Vimeo.
A bunch of new stuff has been added to the Balloon & Needle Vimeo channel. This one is of particular interest for me, as I’ve only just heard about Hankil’s use of the typewriter. I wasn’t sure if it was merely contact mic’d or what, but it seems he is using it in a feedback system...

Rhodri Davies' Youtube channel
Nice news from IHM this week. Rhodri Davies has started a youtube channel where he’s uploading a bunch of london scene footage. It’s really cool to see these, and it’s an amazing reminder how much this music has changed in a relatively short time.
Of particular interest is this rare footage of Mattin, begrudgingly behaving himself. (And I wish I knew more about whatever the...

Another nice performance of "Treatise"
Another video making the rounds. Some very interesting instrumentation here. Though that should be no surprise given the participants.
Persons involved:
Angharad Davies Tim Parkinson John Lely Rhodri Davies James Saunders Lee Patterson
It’s really great people are finally starting to use internet video to document these sorts of actions properly. It’s priceless for us in the...

A nice surprise this morning from facebook. A Vimeo “station” has begun, documenting the live performances of the Balloon and Needle associated musicians.
I’m already a big fan of the dotolim blog, for it’s live documentation of the same group of musicians (plus guests such as Tetuzi...

Bhob Rainey on Soundcloud
A bit late to the party as usual (lucky for me it’s still happening). Bhob Rainey has been uploading some very interesting live recordings of solo (and other) improvisations on Soundcloud.
I’m personally very interested in the tensions and difficulties inherent in modern solo improvisation, and for me, ground zero is definitely solo wind instrument improvisation. I probably...

Rebecca Black - Friday, as a score for a...
First off, I’m still trying to figure out why I did this, but the initial thought, was that it would be hilarious if someone made a Wandelweiser version. Collision of perceived high and low art and all, blah blah. Whatever, a passing thought. But later the idea interested me for some reason. What would it sound like? Could it actually be good? I had some time on my hands, so I thought, what...

Edition Wandelweiser: Empty Words
In an interesting turn of events, Antoine Beuger is giving the world a preview of an upcoming Wandelweiser release of John Cage’s massive “Empty Words”. What will eventually be a 2 disc set (in high quality audio, 10 hours of music) I’m told, is currently available for streaming here. Three alternate version of part three are available, apparently decision is still out on...

Erstwords Interview: Keith Rowe and Radu Malfatti
I’ve been psyched about this record since hearing of it probably over a year ago. What a pairing. I had always kind of thought these two were both too opinionated to really mesh and work together, but they’ve been in the same orbit for so long it seems inevitable, all the same. So of course, hearing of an interview between the two posted on ErstWords a while back, was great news, and...

A nice video from a Michael Pisaro performance
Looks like a nice, varied, student ensemble. Though I see a couple familiar non-student faces there, Vic Rawlings for instance. Sounds like it was a good night.

Lost and Found Sound: Listening to the Northern...
I was looking for some Conet Project stuff yesterday, when I stumbled on this. I wish it had a bit more uninterrupted sound, but what is there is very nice. It oddly reminds me a bit of Lee Patterson’s - Egg Fry #2. Radio phenomena recordist Steeve McGreevy takes us on a sonic tour of the Aurora Borealis. There are some great moments of almost choral wheezing, and some really amazing bits...

Touch Radio Podcast: Chris Watson
A bit late to the game on this one, but it’s worth your time nonetheless. Watson gives some interesting commentary about his experience recording at the south pole for “The Frozen Planet” (BBC, 2011).

Wandelweiser and Improvisation
I finally got around to reading a very thought-provoking post from Yuko Zama at her blog A View from Elsewhere, about her transition in interest from improvisation to Wandelweiser style composition. While I can’t say that I see things exactly as she does, she makes a point about ego-limiting that does strike a chord with me.
I gradually lost interest in the relationship was perhaps...

Field Recordings From India
Recently, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit India. The following are audio snapshots of places in Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, that I found sonically interesting. I hope they, along with the images, can give some clue as to what it’s like to be at these different locations.

It’s been a busy year end, work has been nuts, plus the holidays and a week in India. However, I have been generating some decent post material that will hopefully reach these pages soon.
For one, I finally got a recording situation set up, and I have generated a bunch of stuff that I need to listen to more, but some of it may be up here at some point to get a broader reaction.
I also did...

Tengu et Kitsune II
I’ve been really enjoying this today. It’s hard to really pinpoint why. It’s an odd one for sure, but there is something of the playful spirit I often find in Taku Unami pieces pervading the scene here, which to me is a very good thing.
One of my favorite aspects of this is a sort of odd reactionary timing he uses. He seems very apt at starting something when you least expect...

Possibilities for remote collaboration
I’ve been think about this a lot recently. With logistics and schedules being what they are, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to play with anyone, especially semi regular collaborations. I keep thinking there must be a web service that can do this with reasonable fidelity, though I haven’t really looked. The essentials would be the ability to see/hear in as close to real time...

Possible review coming maybe soon
The Andrea Neumann and Bonnie Jones set from the other night was pretty excellent. My recording came out pretty good, save a few bumps I need to remove. Listening to it again made me feel like doing a short review, as the set addressed a few issues in my mind of late. Anyway, more soon.

Anarchy in Korea
Yeah, I know I’ve been all over the Korean scene recently, but I love what’s going on there. I stumbled upon a bunch more videos recently, that I hadn’t previously seen. Some pretty nice stuff here, plus some cameos from Joe Foster and Mats Gustafsson. Here’s a playlist. Be warned some of these are pretty loud:
New Choi Joonyong release on Ghost & Son
This totally rips. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing.
Ubuweb posts Amplified Gesture
Commissioned by David Sylvian as a companion to his album “Manafon”, “Amplified Gesture” is intended to be an introduction to free-improvised music. Haven’t watched yet, but I’ve been wanting to since I heard of it. I don’t think it’s going to change my life, but it should be interesting none-the-less. More info and link here.
Eliane Radigue at Christ Church in Philadelphia
This was a pretty fantastic show. The space was brick with high windows. kind of monolithic. A single light on a stand, the only thing that illuminated the area. The piece was played like a triptych. The first section, cello only, the second, the two basset horns, the third, the trio. Sounds emerged from the silence as if the already existed there, deep down, and suddenly someone just turned them...
Dotolim video series
This series has been one of the most exciting documents of improvised music on the web in recent memory. I keep going back to it, and it keeps providing inspiration. I made a playlist for all of the existing videos, so I can listen while I work. Here it is for your convenience:
